Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the league for the better part of a decade, backed by the deepest squad and the most consistent continental record. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates carry by far the largest supporter bases, which is why the Soweto derby moves more attention than any title race. Stellenbosch FC, SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United have all been regular disruptors near the top.
The national teams
Bafana Bafana — the men's senior side — play in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying and World Cup qualifying cycles, with FIFA international windows in March, June, September, October and November. Banyana Banyana, the women's side, are continental champions and have the stronger recent tournament record of the two.
