SASSA Grant Payment Dates and Status Explained

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) pays several distinct grants, and they do not all land on the same day. Understanding the structure removes most of the anxiety about a payment that has "not come through".

How the monthly schedule works

SASSA staggers payments across the first working days of each month, in a consistent order:

1. Older Persons Grant — paid first.

2. Disability Grant — paid the following day.

3. Children's grants — Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant and Care Dependency Grant — paid after those.

The SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant sits outside this cycle entirely. It is paid on a rolling basis through the month, and the date varies per recipient, which is why two people approved in the same month can be paid two weeks apart.

Money stays in the account once paid. There is no need to withdraw on the payment day itself, and doing so is why queues form. Where a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the preceding or following working day depending on the grant.

Checking a status

Status is checked through SASSA's own channels — the SRD status page, the SASSA call centre, or a SASSA office. Two things are worth knowing before you check. First, "approved" and "paid" are separate states, and there is normally a gap of days between them. Second, an SRD status can change from approved to declined between months, because eligibility is re-verified against income data every month.

Common reasons an SRD application is declined

The most frequent are: an income source identified above the threshold (including a once-off deposit), being registered for UIF or another government grant, an identity verification failure against Home Affairs records, or a bank account mismatch. Most of these can be appealed, and the appeal window is limited — check the date on the decline notice.

Watch for scams

SASSA does not charge a fee to apply, does not pay grants through WhatsApp groups, and does not ask for banking PINs. Any "SASSA agent" asking for money to speed up an application is a fraudster. Applications and status checks happen only through SASSA's own website, offices and call centre.

Common questions

What date does SASSA pay this month?

Payments are staggered across the first working days of the month in a fixed order: Older Persons first, Disability the next day, then the children's grants. The SRD grant sits outside that cycle entirely and is paid on a rolling basis, so two approved recipients can be paid two weeks apart.

Why was my SRD grant declined?

The most common reasons are an identified income source above the threshold — including a once-off deposit — being registered for UIF or another grant, an identity verification failure against Home Affairs records, or a bank account mismatch. Most can be appealed, and the appeal window is limited, so check the date on the decline notice.

Does my grant money expire if I don't withdraw it?

No. Once paid, the money stays in your account. There is no need to queue on the payment day itself.

What is the difference between 'approved' and 'paid'?

They are separate states, usually days apart. An approved status means the application passed verification; the payment is then scheduled. An SRD status can also change from approved to declined in a later month, because eligibility is re-verified against income data every month.

Is anyone allowed to charge me to apply?

No. SASSA does not charge a fee, does not pay grants through WhatsApp groups, and never asks for a banking PIN. Anyone offering to speed up an application for money is defrauding you.
